Updated: Sources have now backtracked from the reported release date as Fox Home Entertainment has contacted HDTV Magazine and High Def Digest that while a Blu-ray release is planned, the date is not yet official.
Firefly, the single season science fiction series from Joss Whedon, will be re-issued as a high definition Blu-Ray box set on September 23-- nearly exactly six years since it first aired on the FOX network. The 14-episode series which is generally considered to have been mishandled by the network, gained a cult following and led to the motion picture Serenity which premiered three years ago.
Jewel Staite, who portrayed the character of Kaylee in both the series and movie, revealed at an Australian convention in late May that she had been approached by Fox Home Entertainment to record new commentaries for the release.
Amazon is currently taking pre-orders for Firefly on Blu-Ray, priced at $62.95.
This week, TV Squad celebrates Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel on Retro Week. In 1998, Joss Whedon reinvented the horror genre by imbuing a petite, blond girl with the power to vanquish vampires as the Slayer. Though destined to fight the fanged, Buffy would go on to battle other evil creatures, including eventually, the greatest love of her life, Angel. The star-crossed pair would soon realize they were not destined to be together, and Angel would selflessly move to Los Angeles to star in his own series.

A controversy has been brewing with a Joss Whedon-inspired fundraising effort, as apparently the monies raised in two cities went missing last year-- a fact which is only now being revealed.
Started in 2006, Can't Stop the Serenity aims to helpthe Whedon-supported non-profit Equality Now through local showings of Whedon's film Serenity. Since its founding, CSTS has reportedly raised over $160,000 for the non-profit. Last year, however, the Denver and Dallas/North Texas local organizers appeared to have misappropriated the funds their screening raised, to the sum of $7500.
In his personal blog, Christopher Frankonis-- the original CSTS founder-- aired the situation, writing what he termed a "gut-wrenching statement" that called to task the current organizers for the "on-going unethical stall" of not disclosing the lost money to fans. Frankonis reported that he knew about the situation since at least February, but kept silent under the assurance that it would be made public to fans by this year's organizers.
Current global organizer Beth Nelson responded in the CSTS forums, that the reason for the delay was to complete the investigation into the missing funds, so that they might be recovered. She notes that CSTS has initiated a system of checks and balances requiring proof of donations and financial statements from event organizers.
Both point out that these two incidents are unique, that the organization continues to do significant good, and that fans should not be dissuaded from attending CSTS events due to the work of "two bad apples".
Joss Whedon's time-traveling saga in Runaways ties up in issue 30 with what's been described as a "jaw-dropping" conclusion. The final Whedon issue finds the super-powered kids trapped in 1907, trying to avoid a gang war in the streets of New York. Art by Michael Ryan (New X-Men).

Fearing that a new show by Joss Whedon may not be getting the recognition it deserves, a group of enterprising fans are organizing to promote Dollhouse eight months before the first episode is due to air.
On the recently launched Dollhouse Forums, Canadian site admin Nathan initially rallied the Whedonites with a battlecry "Dolls Unite! Save Dollhouse BEFORE it's in danger!" He proposed a number of save-our-show-style promotions, including advertising, organizing viewing parties, creating fansites and evangelizing potential viewers.
The fan campaign idea immediately drew both accolades and detractors.
James Marsters has been showing up everywhere lately. Now it seems, he's going to the moon. Fresh off appearances on BBC's Torchwood (as an alien time traveler) and The CW's Smallville (as an alien robot), Marsters is in final negotiations with Britain's ITV to play astronaut Buzz Aldrin. (Do we sense a theme here?)
The 90-minute telefilm, Moonshot, follows Apollo 11 astronauts Aldrin, Michael Collins and Neil Armstrong in the days leading up to the launch. The production begins filming June 3 in Lithuania, with a scheduled broadcast in July 2009, honoring the mission's 40th anniversary.

As Doctor Jennifer Keller, she was the wide-eyed new comer to the Atlantis expedition. Since then, Keller has faced her share of crisis on the show, and Staite will become a full time cast member on the series' upcoming fifth season, set to debut this July.
