07 Aug 2010 Welcome to the Whedonverse!

squareWverseWhen we launched WhedonAge at the beginning of 2008, it was an evolution of sorts from our previous incarnation as SaveAngel.org. While we had a new domain name, identity and purpose, the site continued to be centered around a standard forum, with a news front-end that had limited interaction between guests and site members. Now, WhedonAge is growing into something even more ambitious...

For a long time, I've been wanting to put together a new type of fan site, that merges the old community aspects of a discussion forum, with the new (AKA "Web 2.0") social aspects of sites like Facebook and Twitter-- incorporating better news and media management.

The Whedonverse Network is that site: intended to bring together fans of Joss Whedon, his work and those associated with him, in a social way. You can create personal profiles, communicate with other fans publicly or privately, and join specialty groups, of your own making. For the moment, the groups are based on the old forums from WhedonAge... but that will change as we shake out all the cool stuff that we can do. Want to create a new group for Whedon-related fan-fic writers or to discuss his work in comics? You can do so here.

As always, we'll continue to cover news and events related to Joss & co,  in a way that we hope is unique and interesting. (And if you'd like to help out, drop us a line!)

We'll be adding more features as we learn what Whedon fans want to play with-- so please explore, check the various ins-and-outs and see what you find. The site's still kinda beta-ish, so let us know if/when you find something glitchy.

WhedonAge will eventually be fully incorporated into Whedonverse.net-- all members of this site should now be able to log into the new system.

In the near term, I'll be writing up some help docs to make it easier to use the shiny system. But for now, feel free to ask questions-- and enjoy!

20 Mar 2010 What's Happening in the Whedonverse II

Continuing with our What's Happening in the Whedonverse series, Whedonage is looking at what's coming up with some of our Whedon alumni.  These are little tidbits that you may want to mark on your calendars so you won't forget to tune in, buy tickets or get to the DVD store!

When Warehouse 13 returns to SyFy this summer, there will be a couple of guest stars every Whedon fan will love to see: Jewel Staite and Sean Maher from Firefly.  In an episode entitled "Mild Mannered," Maher will portray a shy young man who gets exposed to a dangerous object that changes him physically.  Staite will play the unknowing object of his desire.  Kind of a reversal of roles, considering Kaylee's unrequited affection for Simon Tam in the short-lived Fox series.    We'll remind you of this again in a few months, but there's no reason not to mark July on your calendar as the return of Warehouse 13!

13 Feb 2010 Love in the Whedonverse

"Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered" was one of the creepiest episodes on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the one that heightened the tension between Angelus, Drusilla, and Spike, and deepened Buffy's pain ten-fold.  While Spike was Drusilla's chosen companion, it couldn't have been more clear that her psychotic connection to Angelus was something Spike couldn't overcome.  This perverse trio is just one of the most hypnotic love "connections" perfected by Joss Whedon in his ground-breaking shows.

However, since Valentines Day is about love, let us not dwell too long on the twisted as we take a walk down memory lane and check out a few of the most epic romances in the Whedonverse!

23 Oct 2009 Whedon Alum in Horror Films That'll Make You Scream

Horror movies have always been a staple in Hollywood, each offering snapped up by a cult following of movie goers.  Then in 1996, Scream brought the horror movie to a wider audience when David Arquette, Courtney Cox (in the midst of her Friends fame) and Neve Campbell (Party of Five) made the leap.  Suddenly making horror films was hip and many a young star and starlet jumped on board.

So, what do you think your favorite Whedonverse alumni was doing during season breaks of Buffy, Angel and Firefly?  Many made their fair share of horror movies, and now their work is going to pay off dividends for Whedon fans wanting a good scare this Halloween!  Take a look at our top picks for the scariest of the scary bunch, as well as our list of somewhat scary to downright bad horror offerings featuring your favorite Whedon actors.

21 Oct 2009 Five Notable Television Werewolves

Halloween is only a couple weeks away, and with the scary season comes monster movies, ghoul sightings and haunted houses.  It also prompts us to remember some of the time-honored classic horror  figures, many of whom Joss Whedon gave new life and depth.

Werewolves are one of the most ancient of the horror creatures.  Tied in closely with werewolves is the myth of shapeshifters; those who can change from human to wolf in a seamless shifting of forms.  This shifting is known as Lycanthropy, the transformation of a human into another creature, most often in lore as a wolf, usually accomplished with the help of a charm or a potion.  More often lore postulated that the change from human to werewolf is involuntary.

While the Werewolf has been popular on the big screen, it has not been absent from the small screen.  Whedonage looks at five of the most notable Werewolves in television history!

20 Jul 2008 Felicia Day Chat a crashing success, sheds light on her and Joss's plans

Thirteen minutes into the live chat with Felicia Day, something horrible started to happen. Just after introductions, and as the first question was about to be asked, everything came to a sudden, silent halt. Felicia asked, "Am I lagging and not seeing anything scrolling or is no one talking?" It was almost as if some sort of freeze ray had been aimed at the site.

Moments later, WhedonAge crashed, and visitors were greeted with an ominous warning:

Patient Internet warrior that she is, Felicia handled the brief outage with aplomb, and stuck around past her scheduled time to chat with fans of her work.
