In this two-part followup to her "Who Would You Queue To See" article, the inimitable WorldofHiglet covers the events and people of Comic-Con 2008 with fave moments and news bits. If you didn't make it this year, you'll feel like an insider once you read her wrap-up. Part 1 follows the exploits of Joss Whedon and Felicia Day...
Where to start? With an event like the San Diego Comic Con it’s always going to be about what you leave out. So I’m not going to talk about how some of the ‘respected commentators’ are saying the Con was too crowded, there was too little access for ‘real journalists’ and that the parties were too hard to get into. If you want to know more about that and why one of them is saying the Con has now actually ‘jumped the fridge’ (say what?!) then please read the great Con dissection in io9.com.
Such things don’t concern me. I wasn’t there, for a start, and if I had been there I would have been too busy wondering around in a daze with my mouth open to worry about fridges. Seriously. (Makes for an enticing image, n’est pas?)
So what happened there that really mattered to real folk like you and me? Well, before the Con, I wrote up a list of the people I’d queue up all night to see-- and during the Con I casually glanced at what was going on for them (where ‘casually glanced’ equals obsessive checking of all available sources). How did I do that, if I wasn’t there? Well, that’s a good question, and the answer lies in that most misunderstood of beasts – the Social Media. You may Tweet or Plurk or FriendFeed or Facebook or MySpace or Digg or Flickr or…a hundred different flavours. If you do then you are in the belly of the beast and may God have mercy on our souls. But you are in good company because many of our favourite stars are, too.
There is just too much information on the Internet about the Con and the people who matter, so I decided to limit myself to one favourite moment from each of my ‘Queue-list’. Careful observers will see that, in fact, I break that rule at least a few times, but it’s my rule that I made up and I can break it if I want to.
Joss Whedon
Joss was hard at work on the Dollhouse andDr Horrible panels. It is fair to say that Comic Con was a roaring success for all the Dr Horrible team. The Panel was bursting at the seams and the premiere of the full-length screening was so popular the organisers had to hastily set up some extra rooms. Check out the reviews on io9.com and ComicBookResources.com and also PopWatch.
I had a great time at the Sci Fi Channel/Entertainment Weekly party, which seems like the the hot ticket every year. (Fun anecdote: I rode the elevator with Joss Whedon and his entourage, and when we got there, organizers said the party was reaching capacity. With that, Whedon went to the end of the line and said, "All of these people are with me," since he knew they'd let him in. How frakking cool is that guy?)
My fav Joss Tweet:
Well, you know, Joss doesn’t actually Tweet. That would require some sort of technical mastery of the IT kind. But Dr Horrible (whom I strongly suspect is aka Jed Whedon) does. And during Comic Con this was my most fav quote from Dr Horrible:
Over capacity on screening. More added in diff rooms starting 8:30. You are awesome (07:45 PM July 25, 2008)
I wasn’t even there and it made me feel special!
Felicia Day
Star of Dr Horrible and The Guild (which she also wrote and produced), Felicia spent her time at the Con doing the Dr Horrible panel and screening and meeting fans at The Guild table (which was on the California Browncoats’ stand). She also did a benefit book reading for the Browncoats– how great it that? There were lots of Felicia interviews at the Con including Mahalo Daily. The whole cast of The Guild were there at various times during the Con and Felicia has posted a thank you and a link to pictures on WatchTheGuild.com
It’s fair to say that Felicia has fully embraced Social Media in all its forms so choosing one Tweet is difficult. Of course, the obvious one would be the one she was doing when she was busted Tweeting during the Dr Horrible Panel, but we’ll skirt over that (see a Dr Horrible panel review plus ‘Twitter incident’ footage courtesy of TVSquad.com ).
After the Con everything happened at once for Felicia (both her personal website and The Guild website fell over spectacularly and she was immortalized in a Penny Lane cartoon), but she took time to blog about that and her Con experiences and they make for very interesting reading. If ever there was going to be a Warrior Queen Goddess of All Nerds then I would love it to be Felicia
My fav Felicia Tweets (I tried to whittle, honest):
Refreshed and semi-awake, going to a few parties to end the night out. What a day! So many Guild fans, the whole cast was so delighted (08:41 PM July 26, 2008)
When some fans act weird around me, now I understand why. http://tinyurl.com/6jbkg2 Jaqueline Carey made me stutter like an idiot! (08:08 AM July 25, 2008)
