In part 2 of WorldofHiglet's round-up, she covers Nathan Fillion, California Browncoats/Kids Need to Read, Tabitha Grace Smith, Wil Wheaton, Pink Raygun, Scott Sigler, and Jessica Mae Stover. Whoa! After all that, you'll feel just like you were there. (Except maybe without the credit card bill, and all the swag.)
Nathan Fillion
Nathan was on the Dr Horrible panel and the screening and, as always, he was excellent value for money on the entertainment score! He also spent time around and about in the Con, meeting folk and supporting Kids Need To Read with his friend and co-founder novelist P J Haarsma. Nathan actually blogged about Comic Con on MySpace.
Take some time and go and read his post, because it will tell you all you need to know about why Nathan is such a great guy. He gives a short and sweet explanation of Captain Hammer’s superpowers on i09.com
My fav Nathan moments (Nathan doesn’t Tweet – yet!):
Holding the chair for Neil Patrick Harris on the Dr Horrible Panel (and the aftermath of that).
And from the James Riley, California Browncoats:
“…Nathan Fillion (co-founder of KNTR), who stayed for about 2 hours on Saturday morning. He signed stuff, took photos with fans and made a lot of people happy. Despite being unannounced (and unplanned until about an hour before he showed up) there was a line that lasted the entire time he was there.”
There was also a book reading by the following: P J Haarsma (co-founder and author of the very excellent The Softwire books), Nancy Holder (I have some of her ‘Buffy’ books!) along with her daughter, and Felicia Day.
My fav Browncoat/KNTR moments:
I asked James Riley, from the California Browncoats, to try and sum up the Comic Con experience:
“The convention was definitely a great time for Browncoats. We had a ton of scheduled guests like Felicia Day and the cast of the Guild, PJ Haarsma (Kids Need to Read co-founder and author), artist Adam Levermore-Rich, authors Kevin J. Anderson, Rebecca Moesta and Nancy Holder, and costumer designer Shawna Trpcic….Mark Sheppard stopped by for almost an hour on Saturday and helped us raise money for KNTR…
…Will Conrad, artist on the Serenity comics, including the cover artist for our exclusive variant of Better Days #1, stopped by and signed some of the comics for us to sell. Joss Whedon stopped by for about a minute during Shawna's signing to say hi. We also saw at random times Dr. Horrible producer Michael Boretz, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen.
But it was the constant and almost overwhelming presence of the fans that made this a great year. For almost the entire show we had a crowd at the booth. We even had to have a line just to buy Firefly/Serenity merchandise (plus Guild DVD's and Dr. Horrible shirts)…for a show and movie that hasn't had a new production in over 3 years…
I also would like to say a huge thank you to our committee that put the booth together as well as all the volunteers who helped at the con itself. We couldn't do this without any of them.”
Tabitha Grace Smith
The cast and crew of Buffy Between the Lines all met up for a party on the Saturday but Tabz was there beforehand, meeting people and doing her thing for all the sites and podcasts she represents (Buffy: Between the Lines, Joss’d, Strangely Literal…). She also did an awesome real-time ‘Twitterathon’ from the Dollhouse panel which was great for those of us not able to be there. You can hear her audio recording of that panel on Joss’d.com.
Disaster struck when Tabz lost the three Guild Season 1 DVDs she had had signed, but help was at hand. After she had Tweeted about her loss Felicia replied that she had them on The Guild stand still, and hopefully Tabz now has them back. After a full day at the Con and the party, Tabz and Lisa T (who plays Cordelia in Season 2 of B:BtL which starts on the 16th August and who is also the creator/host of the ‘Hypersensitive’ pop culture podcast) had a slow start to Sunday, as you will see below….
My fav Tabz Tweets:
@hypersensitive and I are awake.... it's like a miracle. I can't believe how tired I am after only one day at the Con! (10:52 AM July 27, 2008)
…followed by:
I lied, @hypersensitive is still asleep.... :D (11:33 AM July 27, 2008)
News just in from the BBtL website: The first Officially Sanctioned fan-production of Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog will be by the BBtL team at DragonCon on Sunday, 31st August at 11.30 PM…see their website for full details!
Wil Wheaton
Wil was at the Star Trek Panel and also was signing his books at the Dumbrella stand. And having photos taken with Felicia. And being interviewed, including one with Mahalo Daily. He also took the time to attend some panels including Dr Horrible and Ben 10 and he Tweeted magnificently from both. Wil Tweets with passion and frequency – they are very funny, sometimes cruel and very human (oh – and belated happy birthday, Wil!).
My fav Wil Tweets (three was the bare minimum I got it down to):
“@feliciaday: "I'm twittering under here." audience: "ooooohhhhhh!!!!" @feliciaday: *blush* *stammer* *keeps hands on table*” (01:58 PM July 25)
Joss, praising Nathan Fillion's smarmy acting: "Shatner, your time is done." (02:29 PM July 25, 2008)
It is becoming increasingly difficult to make my saves versus "OH MY GOD SHINY AWESOME DO WANT MUST HAVE NOW!!!!!!11!l (02:02 PM July 26, 2008)
Pink Raygun
Juliana Weiss & Josh Roessler were at the Con representing Pink Raygun and Tweeting direct from the Panels for our enjoyment. They have posted their reports from Friday (Max Brooks, Atlantis, Entertainment Weekly Showrunners Panel, Kyle XY and Samurai Girl) and Saturday (Chuck, Fringe, Battlestar Galactica and Dollhouse) with a special ‘Spotlight on Max Brooks’. There is also a wonderful article about how Hollywood can go back to ignoring geeks now Comic Con is ended.
My fav Pink Raygun Tweets:
Beau Bridges is on Stargate, who knew? (09:53 AM July 25, 2008)
Eliza - Joss Whedon is a career brassiere (12:28 PM July 26, 2008)
Kara finds peace at the end of BSG. What does that mean? (02:13 PM July 26, 2008)
Scott Sigler
Scott, fresh from being EPIC FU of the week (spookily Jessica/Artemis Eternal also get a mention on this episode) headed to San Diego under difficult circumstances. Usually a regular Tweeter, Scott had other things on his mind this time but with Infected out now (which I can’t recommend highly enough) and Contagious out on December 30th you can catch up with him at scottsigler.com.
My fav recent Scott Sigler Tweet (that is suitable to print here):
Time to get cracking. Coffee? check! Dog walked? check! Unabated desire to conquer the world? Check! (08:27 AM August 03, 2008)
Jessica Mae Stover
It was a busy old Con for Jessica and the Artemis Eternal Wingmen as they raised awareness of this independently produced, micro-funded sc-fi short. Tweeting under J_Sto, Jessica kept us all up to date with her Tweets, which was great because it really makes you feel part of it. Plus she has a rare sense of humour – see her in action here. With lots of interviews including with Phil Plait, The Bad Astronomer and Mahalo Daily they still had time for fun - there are more photos from the Con on the website.
My fav J_Sto Tweet:
@zadi awesome! Thanks for the EPIC FU coverage of ARTEMIS ETERNAL! Stop by and see us at comic-con when you get a sec! (09:08 AM July 25, 2008)
…quickly followed by:
I have used more exclamation points since being at Comic-Con than I have this entire year. (09:10 AM July 25, 2008)
So that’s my little Comic Con roundup. Isn’t it fun to see how the other half live and enjoy all the same stuff we do? And, just to clarify matters a little. Following people on Twitter et al is not the same as stalking them. Oh no. It is a great way to get a little window into what they are up to but the real fun of it is when you start to use it yourself and interact. That little gem came from Tabz, and she is absolutely right.
